ICE in our Communities
In communities across the country, including right here in Iowa, masked and unidentified federal agents, including those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), have created fear, chaos, and confusion. People deserve to see a uniform, a badge, and clear authority when law enforcement interacts with them. Federal enforcement actions should build public safety, not erode trust or terrorize people in their own neighborhoods.
States across the country have recognized that masked, unidentified federal enforcement actions undermine public safety and civil rights. New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Utah, and Oregon have either passed or are actively considering laws to prohibit federal agents from concealing their identities and to require clear identification and transparency during enforcement actions.
What I'll Fight For
-
Ban the use of masks and face coverings by federal agents operating in Iowa communities, ensuring people can see who is approaching them and why.
-
Require that all federal law enforcement officers clearly identify themselves with visible name tags, agency insignia, and badge numbers whenever conducting enforcement actions in our cities and towns.
-
Mandate body-worn cameras for all federal agents operating in public spaces, with clear policies for recording, retention, and public disclosure of footage related to enforcement actions.
-
Enact state laws that prohibit unidentified enforcement actions and strengthen local oversight, so that community safety and civil rights are not undermined by opaque federal operations.
-
Work with local, state, and federal partners to standardize transparency and accountability policies for all officers interacting with Iowa residents, aligning federal enforcement practices with the standards we already expect from local police agencies.
Communities know how to take care of each other when they feel safe and respected. They don’t need fear or secrecy — they need clarity, accountability, and trust. I’ll fight to ensure federal law enforcement operates with the same transparency and responsibility that every community deserves.
